Brief description: although you can see tumulis throughout the city (mounds about 10m high covered with grass that “hide” a tomb inside), in the Tumulis Park of Daereungwon you can walk among more than 20 perfectly preserved tumulis, and in addition, visit the interior of one of them: the Ancient Tomb of Chunmachong. This tomb was excavated in 1973 by archaeologists and today it contains, in addition to a funerary chamber with an original sarcophagus, replicas of the artifacts that were found buried next to the graves. It is an ideal place to understand how tumulis were built in the Silla period (years 100-900) and what they put inside. In addition, there is a very illustrative exhibition about this period in the history of Korea, the so-called Golden Kingdom. Very highly recommended! We recommend starting by the north entrance of the park. Go to visit the Tomb of Chunmachong, and then go down south walking among the tumulis (it is forbidden to climb them). Finally exit at the south-east entrance to continue with the next visit.
Duration of the visit: 1h30min.
