- Brief description: back to Kyoto, you have to stop at Inari and visit its amazing Shinto shrine. The temple, dedicated to the Shinto God of rice, is beautiful in itself, but is primarily known for the trails marked by thousands of red torii gates, that start from its back and reach the top of the mountain. They became famous by appearing in the film Memoirs of a Geisha. These doors are donations from individuals and companies, costing from 400,000¥ the cheapest, to more than one million yen the larger doors. The hike to the top is about 1h30min, but it is enough to walk to the Yotsutsuji intersection (about 30-45 minutes) where you can enjoy stunning views of Kyoto.
- Duration of visit: 2h
- Cost: free
- Opening times: open all day
- How to get there: go back to the JR station and take the Nara local line towards Kioto. Get off at Inari (1h10min drive), the temple is just off. Another slightly faster alternative is to take the fast line to Nara (Nara Lmt. Express), get off at Rokujizou (35min), switch to Nara local line and get off at Inari (12min). Both alternatives are covered by JRP. If you don't have JRP, just buy the tickets in the station.
