Suggested itinerary: Costa Rica in 14 days for independent travellers

Day 1: Arrival in Costa Rica

Arrival at San Jose International Airport. Pick up rental car. Transfer to Puerto Viejo. Night in Puerto Viejo. 

Day 2: Puerto Viejo

Relax on Playa Negra. Snorkel in the reef. Bath in the natural pools. Trek through the forest up to Salsa Brava surfer beach. Visit to Cahuita National Park. Night in Puerto Viejo. 

Day 3: Puerto Viejo

Relax on the southern beaches of Puerto Viejo (Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo and Punta Mona). Night in Puerto Viejo. 

Day 4: Tortuguero

Transfer to Tortuguero (car + boat). Walk through the village. Night tour to see the turtles laying their eggs on the beach (July-October). Night in Tortuguero. 

Day 5: Tortuguero

Morning boat tour through the water trails of Tortuguero National Park. Walking tour through the park. Return to the wharf and transfer to Arenal by car. Night in Arenal. 

Day 6: Arenal Volcano

Visit to Volcán Arenal National Park. Visit to the Fortuna River Waterfalls. Relaxing bath at the natural hot springs. Night visit to the volcano park. Night in Arenal. 

Day 7: From Arenal to Samara

Transfer to Samara, exit point to visit some of the most beautiful Pacific beaches. Night in Samara. 

Day 8: Samara

Relax on Samara beaches. Visit to Buena Vista Beach in order to see turtles laying their eggs in the sand. Night in Samara. 

Day 9: Pacific beaches

Relax on Carrillo beach. Transfer to Manuel Antonio National Park by car. Night in Manuel Antonio. 

Day 10: Manuel Antonio

Relax on Manuel Antonio beaches. Visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. Night in Manuel Antonio. 

Day 11: Uvita

Transfer to Uvita, gateway to all whale watching tours. Stop at some tropical beaches on the way. Night in Uvita. 

Day 12: Whale Wathing in Bahía Ballena

Whale Watching boat trip in Bahia Ballena (from August to November and from January to March). Walk through the town. Night in Uvita. 

Day 13: Poas Volcano

Return trip to San Jose visiting the Botos lagoon and the Poas volcano on the way. Poas, 2,700 metres high, is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. Its crater can be observed from a viewing point. Night in San José. 

Day 14: Back home

Transfer to the airport and flight back home.
