From Yuyuan Gardens you can walk to People's Square, the political, business and cultural centre of Shanghai. It takes 30 minutes and the walk is very interesting. When you get to the square, we recommend walking around the surrounding area to see Shanghai City Hall, the Grand Theatre, and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Seeing them from the outside is enough but if you want, you can always go in.
