If you've visited the entire city on the first day, here are some other points of interest. While not essential, they are still very nice.
- Shuanglin Temple (visit 1 hr - 40CNY): famous for its sculptures and murals. Just 6 km from the city, you can rent a bike and take a relaxing ride or go by taxi.
- Zhenguo Temple (visit 1 hr - 30CNY): oldest wooden temple in China. To get there, take bus no.9 to the final stop (3CNY).
- Wang Family Compound (3 hr visit - 66CNY): 60km from Pingyao. An 18th luxury home, known to Chinese as the Civilian Forbidden City. You can take a bus or train to Jiexiu and from there, take another bus to the compound. The trip is bit complicated and since taxis are cheap, it's worth arranging for one at the hotel. You can combine this visit with the one to Shuanglin Temple.
- Qiao Family Compound (2 hr visit - 40CNY): 48km from Pingyao. Another luxury home, though simpler than the previous one. You can take the bus to Taiyuan and walk from there to the house, but, again, we recommend taking a taxi. This visit can be combined with the one to Zhenguo Temple.
