- Brief description: Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Gorge) is probably the deepest canyon in the world. It's located around 100 km northeast of Lijiang (62 miles), between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The Jingsha River runs ferociously through the gorge, forming 18 impressive rapids. Walkways allow you to admire the river roaring past. Some people do a two-day hike through the area.

- How to get there: in the city you'll find lots of organized tours that, for 150CNY (including entrance fee), take you all through the area. The problem is that they make numerous stops to induce you to buy things and it takes 8 hours to get back to Lijiang. We don't recommend it! Go to the bus station and negotiate a day trip with one of the taxi drivers (the ones in minivans), making it very clear that you want to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge (1hr, 150CNY).
