The Green Island is a coral cay situated in the Great Barrier Reef, 27km away from Cairns (45min by boat). We love its white sand beaches in contrast with the deep green rain forest. In the island, considered National Park, there is just one luxury resort. You can walk it in 10min. The aboriginal people say it used to be 4 times its current size so... run just in case it disappears!
On the island, in addition to sunbathing on its fantastic beaches, you can enjoy the coral reef using snorkel gear. The reef is not as impressive here (there are not so many corals and wildlife as in the excursions that go to the outer platform) but if diving is not your thing and lying on the sand is, it can be your option (and much cheaper).
You can visit the island staying at the resort, or taking a day trip from Cairns.
- One night in the Green Island Resort costs about 500€ per night (breakfast and transfers included). Rooms are spacious, comfortable and integrated in the rain forest. Quite an experience, not for all pockets though(book directly at Booking.com).
- For that reason we recommend to take a day trip from Cairns. The trip costs AU$90 per person (plus AU$6,50 of taxes). This includes transfer to the island and a choice of snorkel gear or glass bottom boat trip to explore the reef. Our favourite company is Great Adventure. They have more daily departures, all boats are fast and have an agreement with the resort to use the swimming pool. With them, you'll be able to stay in the island 2-7h depending on the boat times you choose. Our recommendation is to choose the Eco Adventure. When making the reservation, choose boat times and hotel transfer if needed (additional AU$24). No need to choose any other extra. Another good company to do this day trip is Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises.
- If you would like to have both experiences (outer reef platform and Green Island) Great Adventure has the Green Island and Great Barrier Reef Adventure. It includes 2h in the Green Island and 3h in the outer platform. It costs AU$244 per person (plus AU$6,50 of taxes). Certified divers can do one dive for additional AU$114 or 2 dives for additional AU$164.
